In a world marked by challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity, science and innovation are more important than ever. On the evening of November 28, 2024, the International Virtual Institute for Global Change (IVIG) celebrated 25 years of pioneering work in the search for solutions to these problems at the luxurious Barra da Tijuca Olympic Golf Course. The event brought together important names from the academic, business, political and public sector worlds, as well as employees and their families, in a night of celebration and projection of the future.
Founded in 1999, IVIG has established itself as one of the leading sustainability research centers in Brazil, developing more than 200 projects that have directly impacted the lives of thousands of people. Over the past two and a half decades, IVIG has stood out in the creation of clean technologies, the promotion of renewable energy, and the analysis of the socio-environmental impacts of large projects. The creation of the National Biodiesel Program and participation in international forums on climate change are just a few examples of its legacy.
With a keen eye on the future, IVIG is stepping up its efforts in the areas of biomass, solid waste, decarbonization, water resource management and artificial intelligence applied to sustainability. The institution seeks innovative solutions to the challenges of energy transition, circular economy and adaptation to climate change.
The partnership with COPPE/UFRJ and the collaboration with Brazilian and international researchers were fundamental to the success of IVIG. Over the years, the institute has formed a network of research excellence that contributes to the development of a more sustainable future for the planet.
Under the leadership of Professor Marcos Freitas, IVIG’s executive coordinator, the institution has a promising future ahead. In the coming years, IVIG intends to expand its activities, strengthen its partnerships and consolidate its position as an international reference in research and innovation for sustainability. With the goal of building a more just and equitable future for all, IVIG invites researchers, companies and educational institutions to join this journey."
