Who we are

Linked to UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), the International Virtual Institute for Global Change (IVIG) was created to promote the integration of science, technology, and sustainability , bringing together national and international research and cooperation institutions.

Located on Fundão Island, IVIG boasts a sustainable complex built with materials and technologies that reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 60%, making it a benchmark in innovation and applied research. The Institute has three complementary structures: the Biodiesel Pilot Plant, focused on the development and validation of biofuel production processes; the Algae Laboratory , dedicated to research in biotechnology, sustainability, and biomass utilization; and the LDP – Applied Research Laboratory in Decarbonization and Pyrolysis of Waste , focused on the development of technologies for waste conversion and emission mitigation, integrating applied research, technological innovation, and energy transition.

History

Throughout its history, IVIG/COPPE/UFRJ has partnered with public authorities, companies, and organizations, offering innovative solutions to environmental, social, and technological challenges. Founded in 1999, the International Virtual Institute for Global Change celebrates more than 25 years of activity in science, innovation, and sustainable development. It has established itself as one of the leading multidisciplinary research centers in Brazil, conducting cutting-edge projects in technology, environment, and sustainability.

With research ranging from climate change to the development of clean technologies, IVIG contributes to scientific advancement and a more sustainable future. Conceived by Professor Luiz Pinguelli Rosa , in partnership with FAPERJ and COPPE/UFRJ , the institute promotes excellence in research and trains new generations of researchers committed to transforming the planet.
